Earn 5% Back on Travel with Blue Cash from American Express Cards

Earn 5% Back on Travel with Blue Cash from American Express Cards -

American Express just announced that two of its cash back credit cards will earn cash back rewards on travel purchases. Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express (a NextAdvisor advertiser) andBlue Cash Everyday Card from American Expressnow earn 5% cash back on eligible travel purchases during the first 6 months of card ownership (up to $4,000 in purchases, then 1% back).
Eligible travel includes airline tickets purchased directly from an airline, hotel stays bought directly from a hotel and car rentals purchased directly from a list of major car rental companies including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National. Purchases directly from cruise lines, tour operators and travel agencies (including online ones like Orbitz and Expedia) also qualify. The cash back rewards max out at $200 and the 5% back is only good for the first 6 months — after either of these events have occurred, you’ll earn a standard 1% cash back. But 5% back is such a great reward that if you plan on booking travel in the near future, it makes sense to apply for either of these cards. As an added plus, both cards are available to those with good credit, usually thought to be a credit score over 670.
The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express, our No. 1 ranked cash back card, earns a terrific 6% back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 in purchases, then 1% back), 5% back on eligible travel purchases booked in the first 6 months (up to a max of $200 back), and an unlimited 3% back at U.S. gas stations and at select department stores like JCPenney, Kohl’s, Sears, Macys and more. In addition, all other purchases earn an unlimited 1% cash back. The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express also has a 12-month 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers (note that there is a 3% balance transfer fee). If the card’s $95 annual fee is off-putting, consider its sister card, the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express (detailed below), which has absolutely no annual fee.
The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express is very similar to the Blue Cash Preferred Everyday Card from American Express but has no annual fee. You’ll earn 5% back on eligible travel purchases in the first 6 months (up to a max of $200 cash back), 3% back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 in purchases, then the standard 1% back), an unlimited 2% back at U.S. gas stations and select department stores as well as an unlimited 1% back on everything else. The card also features a 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers (with a 3% balance transfer fee).
